For twenty years the answer to “how do I reach you?” in the UAE has been a phone number. On 29 June 2026 that stopped being the only answer. WhatsApp opened username reservations worldwide, and the headlines that followed — “WhatsApp to replace phone numbers with usernames” — landed hard in a market where people pay six figures for the right digits.
So the question is fair, and worth answering precisely rather than defensively: if your customers can message you at a handle, what is your number still for? The honest answer is that a username changes one job out of five, and in the UAE it changes less than it does almost anywhere else in the world. What WhatsApp usernames actually change
A WhatsApp username is an optional handle you can attach to your account so that someone who does not have your number can start a conversation with you. Once you enable it, a person you message for the first time sees your handle instead of your digits.
That is the whole feature. Everything else about the account works exactly as it did before, and Meta has been explicit about the limits:
- You still register with a phone number. The username sits on top of an account that a SIM verified. It is a display layer, not an identity.
- There is no directory. In Meta’s own words, “there’s no directory to browse and no suggestions — people will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time.”
- Existing chats are unaffected. Conversations and contacts you already have continue to run on the phone numbers they were created with.
- There is an optional Username Key — an extra code a first-time contact must know before a message reaches you, layered on top of the handle.
- Sharing is manual. At launch there is no QR handoff for usernames; you tell someone your handle out loud or send it as text.
A username changes what a stranger sees when you contact them. It does not change how anyone reaches you when they need to. Those are two different problems, and only one of them was ever solved by a phone number that people can remember.

Reservation is not activation. Today you are placing a hold on a name for a feature that has not fully shipped. That is a good reason to reserve early — and a bad reason to change how you publish your contact details.
The five jobs your UAE mobile number does
Almost every confused take on this story comes from treating “phone number” as one thing. It is five things wearing the same nine digits. Separate them and the impact of usernames becomes obvious.

The UAE exception: a username cannot carry a call here
This is the part of the story that global coverage misses entirely, and it matters more in the UAE than in any other market where WhatsApp is popular.
The TDRA treats internet calling as a regulated telecommunications service, not as an app feature. Its published FAQs define VoIP as “all of the services and technologies that allow the transmitting, receiving, delivering and routing of voice telecommunications by means of Internet Protocol”, state that it is governed by the VoIP Regulatory Policy, and note that “licensees are required to block access to certain unacceptable content including unlicensed (and therefore illegal) VoIP services”. TDRA maintains its own list of approved internet-calling applications.
The practical consequence for residents is unchanged in 2026: WhatsApp messaging works normally on UAE networks, while WhatsApp’s in-app voice and video calling does not. Voice calls over the internet run through applications approved for the UAE market, usually paired with an internet-calling plan from e& or du.
In markets where WhatsApp calling works, a username can plausibly become someone’s main contact route. In the UAE it cannot. A username can carry a text; it cannot carry a call. Every voice call that reaches you here still travels over the licensed mobile network, and on that network you are addressed by one thing only: your number.

That is why the numbers used by home-services businesses, drivers and real-estate agents are chosen to be dictated aloud and remembered, not to be typed into a search bar.
Broadcast vs handshake: why usernames have no discovery value
The most useful way to think about the difference is to ask how the identifier gets from you to the other person.
A phone number is a broadcast identifier. You can paint it on a van, print it on a receipt, put it on a hoarding on Sheikh Zayed Road or read it out on a radio ad, and any stranger who sees or hears it can act on it immediately, with no app, no account and no prior relationship. Its usefulness scales with how many people encounter it, which is exactly why memorability commands a premium.
A username is a handshake identifier. Because there is no directory, no search and no suggestion engine, it only works if the other person already has it. What changes for UAE businesses on WhatsApp
Consumers get a handle. Businesses get something more technical and, in the medium term, more consequential: the business-scoped user ID, or BSUID.
When a customer contacts a business through the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta now supplies an identifier of up to 128 alphanumeric characters, prefixed with the user’s two-letter country code and a period — a UAE customer arrives as AE. followed by a long string. It appears in message webhooks whether or not that customer has enabled a username, and it began flowing to platforms and CRMs during the first half of 2026.
Three properties of the BSUID deserve attention if you run a UAE business on WhatsApp:
- It is scoped to your business portfolio. The same customer generates a different identifier for a different company. It is not a portable contact detail; it is a per-relationship key.
- You may no longer receive a phone number for new contacts. If a customer messages you via a username, the digits you used to store, dial and match against your CRM may simply not be there.
- Your outbound reach narrows. Only business numbers inside the same portfolio can message a given BSUID. Change platforms carelessly and you can lose the ability to reach people you have already spoken to.
A great many UAE businesses run their entire customer database as a phone book: numbers in WhatsApp, numbers in a spreadsheet, numbers in an accounting system. Does this change what a premium number is worth?
The intellectually honest answer is that seven weeks is not enough time to measure a price effect, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can publish is the live state of our own market on the day this article was written, and it shows no sign of a repricing event.

One detail in that data is worth pausing on, because it says more about UAE number pricing than any headline about messaging apps: 29.4% of priced listings sit at exactly AED 4,250 and another 18.4% at exactly AED 3,000. Nearly half the market is quoted at two round numbers. Why a username can never be an asset
Assets need three properties: they must be finite, they must be transferable, and someone other than you must be able to want yours specifically. A UAE mobile number has all three. A WhatsApp handle has none.

Scarcity is not an accident of the numbering system; it is the reason the market exists. There is exactly one 050 100 0000 in the UAE, and its owner can sell it. How to reserve your username in the UAE
Reservations reached UAE accounts in the first wave, but the rollout is server-side, so not everyone sees it on the same day.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version from the App Store or Play Store.
- Open Settings → Account → Username. If the entry is missing, the feature has not reached your account yet — check again after the next update.
- Enter the handle you want. Handles run from 3 to 35 characters and use lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores; names that look like web addresses are rejected.
- If it is taken, use the generator or add a distinguishing word rather than a random string — you will have to say it out loud.

Five mistakes to avoid
- Assuming your number is now private. Everyone you have already messaged still has it, and every existing chat still runs on it.
